This is a question that comes up quite frequently in my design practice with many new and existing clients.  And is especially inviting considering the unlimited access we have today to an exciting array of designer fabrics for use in various projects now available from across the globe in the textile industry.

So let’s take the most popular question that comes under consideration, “When & why should I re-upholster?”  Well, if done under the wrong circumstances, it can become a costly endeavor, but there are some valid functional reasons to consider that typically outweigh cost entirely. For example, if the piece was constructed soundly to begin with, unlike many of the “disposable” pieces currently in the market today, it would be well worth the investment to breathe new life into a “classic” and extend its use for many more beautiful years to come.  And remember, it’s not just the outer covering we’re referring to that may be worn, but springs, batting, primary cushions and/or struts may need reinforcing too.

We all know things just aren’t made the way they used to.  So, let’s take a closer look and ask some key questions which will help validate the designer’s decision to suggest or offer re-upholstery as a clear solution for her client:

1.)     How old is the piece?  This matters because let’s face it, with all the disposable furniture out there, if the piece is solidly constructed of real wood instead of composite materials chances are it’s sturdy and better made than what’s currently available.  Replacing it for something comparable in today’s market might cost a pretty penny.

2.)    Depending on your answer to #1 above, if the piece fits your space requirements then you’re already addressing the scale and proportion which equate to good design.  If the piece is pleasingly comfortable you know exactly what you’ve got verses having to shop and start the process of looking all over again for the perfect piece to fit your needs. If overall you’re pleased with the piece why not personalize the piece and update it to suit your space and décor?  There are so many fabric choices that can make anything old look new again.

3.)    Now, if the piece is a clearly an antique, whether you choose to do something unexpected or pay homage to the traditional, classic sense of style the piece evokes-it’s a win-win. Either way, it’s a smart way to repurpose or recycle a family heirloom for future generations to enjoy for many years to come.

Frame windows by adding panels that extend to the end of your windows/doors to integrate the full width and height. For average height rooms (8' or so) mount the hardware just shy of the ceiling leaving a little piece of wall exposed at the top.  Hanging them directly over the window cuts the height of the ceiling and makes the room look choppy.  If it's an extra wide window, mount a valance and add panels to balance things out and add drama.

If privacy is concern, don’t fret…the frumpy, vinyl window shade has been reborn! Behold a true, Florida classic (look and feel)-bamboo shades. This natural alternative has made a huge come back with so many exciting, yet functional patterns and textures to choose from.  They come lined or unlined, fit standard size windows, and can be customized for sliding glass doors with nifty remotes. There's sure to be a pattern that will accent your decor and tie your look together, and keep those nosey neighbors at bay!
